Joey's Reading Cup

26 MARCH 2017 Back to News

This year the college is starting a new initiative called the Joey’s Reading Cup. Research shows that reading for pleasure benefits students in many ways: it improves spelling, builds vocabulary and develops empathy. Regular reading has also been shown to improve results in mathematics. At St Joseph’s, we believe that regular reading is vital for all aspects of learning. As Dr Seuss once wrote, “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go.”

The Joey’s Reading Cup will run on a voluntary basis in Years 7, 8, 9 and 10. Students who choose to participate will be issued with a reading record and will keep a record of all books read throughout the year, with parent/carer signatures provided as proof of reading. Certificates will be awarded for reaching the following levels:

  • 20 books in one year – Super reader
  • 30 books in one year – Excellent reader
  • 40+ books in one year – Outstanding reader

A book prize will be awarded at Presentation Evening for the student who has read the most books in each year (Years 7 – 9).

The Joey’s Reading Cup will be awarded to a student in Year 10 at the college Presentation Evening, with the inaugural cup being awarded in 2018. Students who have received a certificate at any level in Years 7 – 10 will be eligible to apply for the Reading Cup.  Further information is available from the college library.
