Creative and Performing Arts
St Joseph’s Catholic College offers a wide range of musical and performance activities catering for individual needs and interests.
St Joseph’s has a strong tradition of choral excellence. Our College Choir gives students with a passion for singing their chance to sing exciting and varied repertoire, develop aural awareness and confidence through performance. Mr Phil Rees (OAM) is a highly regarded and professional conductor.
Music teachers work closely with Mr Phil Rees to plan performance and learning opportunities for the Choir. These have included participating in The Australian National Eisteddfod in Canberra, (where they have won awards), singing in concerts with The Central Coast Philharmonia, performing in concerts with Chatswood High, James Morrision, Northholm Grammar School and workshops with The Idea of North. They also participate in service learning by singing at nursing homes, retirement villages and Mary Mac’s at Woy Woy. Singing at Liturgies and Masses is also a big part of contributing to the life of the college. The Choir have won 1st place in The Central Coast Eisteddfod on many occasions. They have also toured to New Zealand.
Rehearsal is Wednesday morning 8am – 9am in Shekinah. Cost is $35 per term.
For any student who learns instruments and would like the experience of performing in an ensemble situation. Current members play percussion, violin, cello, flute, saxophone, clarinet and piano. This ensemble has performed at Erina Fair, liturgies, masses, nursing homes and retirement villages. They have also merged with St Edward’s to perform in the combined school musicals. It is hoped this ensemble will continue to grow in size and have many exciting performances in the future.
Rehearsal is Monday lunchtime in the music rooms. No cost. The orchestra is conducted by the college music teachers.
St Joseph’s has a long history of musicals production, which are organised enabling any student who has a passion for singing, acting, dancing, production etc to take part.
College musicals are usually combined with St Edward’s and over the years have included some wonderful productions, from Bugsy Malone in 1996 to How the West Was Warped in 2011 and Alice in Wonderland in 2014.
Rehearsals take place at lunchtimes and one designated afternoon after school from 3.15 – 4.30pm. There is no cost involved with participation in musicals.
We currently have lessons which occur during class time once a week on the following instruments: piano, voice, guitar, bass and drums. Lessons are approximately $25-$30 per lesson and fees are payable by the term. For more information on lesson times, days and teachers please collect a flyer from the office or CAPA faculty.
Dance Troupe News
St Joseph’s girls shine at DanceLife Unite Eisteddfod:
Congratulations to our Dance Troupe who were winners at DanceLife Unite Eisteddfod on Sunday March 22nd 2015. Their performance was to their usual high standard and was awarded with an outstanding result of 98%! This qualifies our troupe to perform at Nationals to be held at Luna Park in the September school holidays.
Additionally our routine was awarded Best Choreography across all senior routines of the day which was a fantastic recognition of the performance talents of our Dance Troupe instructor Alexa Podjie.
The girls learned a new routine to add to their repertoire for the Gosford City Performing Arts Eisteddfod in mid May. Our girls won first place in the two categories in which they competed to retain their title from 2014.
Congratulations girls on your efforts, team work and performance talents. Well done!
